AORの早すぎた名曲。

「ジャマイカの月の下で」というロマンティックなタイトル、メランコリックなボサノバ。カリブ海の波音を聴きながら、ジャメイカン・ビール片手にチル・アウト……と思いきや、歌詞の内容はそんな単純な楽園幻想とは異なる。

ジャマイカでの女性との行きずりの恋、そして別れ。それに続けて、彼女が住む都会の不毛さを説くことで、去って行った女性への未練を語る：

City blues and pain
It's always just the same

Every radio is blaring
A hole in the wall
On the streets the men, they are sweating
In dirty overalls

何度も何度も何度も
キミは鎖につながれていることに気づくだけさ
都会の憂さと苦しみは
いつだって変りはしない

そこかしこで鳴り響くラジオ
窮屈な狭い部屋
通りでは、汚れたツナギの男たちが
汗をかいている

ここで、ジャマイカを専ら楽園として描くだけでなく、それと異なる負のイメージもきちんと描かれている。

また、おそらく、主人公がジャマイカに来る前に自分の国で送っていた暮らし、見ていた風景もこれと大差ないものだろう。彼もまもなく都会に帰らなければならない。彼にとっても、「都会の憂さと苦しさは／いつだって変りはしない」。

でも、ジャマイカの月の下では
何もかもがかすんで見える
今だよキミ、今なら僕をだますことができる

ジャマイカの月の下では、都会の日常を直視せずにすむ。しかし、それも今だけ、ほんの束の間のこと。

夏休みって、すぐ終るなぁ。
